New PS3 today and I updated the software to the newest version (2.5 I think).
I downloaded the ps3grid_live.zip and loaded it onto a new 1 Gig USB stick. Went through the instructions at
http://www.ps3grid.net/live.php
But when linux loads it just sits with the kboots:_ prompt.
It does not look like anything is happening and the devise does not show on my account.
Please help. The instructions looked so easy just plug it in and it works ??

Hi
I decided to load Yellow Dog on the PS3 as it does not work from the USB stick, maybe the new PS3 software version ??. It will take me over 20 hours to download the iso file.

I am running into this same problem, stuck at the kboot: prompt.
I downloaded and copied:
10 February 2008 - Updated otheros.bld to support FW>2.01
15 November 2007 - Reduced filesystem footprint to <512MB
to a 2gb thumb drive.
My PS3 has the most uptodate firmware.
Any assistance would be welcome.
Update: downloading the new version

Since I have seen no attempt by you to make the ps3grid USB release actually WORK, I assume that you have given up on the PS3, except for fully installed support. I would appreciate if someone there could actually finish what was started and make a PS3grid USB device that actually works on ANY PS3, not just the earliest models that had firmware that is not even in use ANYWHERE any longer.
It really is sad that the last release was so long ago, and sadder still that THAT release ALSO did NOT work. Please do not claim this post is hostile. It is ONLY an iteration of FACT.
If you have NOT 'dropped the ball', then PLEASE publish a release schedule for a version that actually works, OR figure out what is keeping the current version from working so that we can personally make the changes required to make it work. I suspect that it is merely a naming convention problem with your kboot.con(f) file. A post that details what should be done to make that release actually work would be nice. I should have to waste hours trying to get it going. |

USB stick worked just fine for me. If I'm remembering correctly, I just hit {Enter} when I got to the kboot prompt and it loaded from there. I gave up on the stick version simply because my LAN port died on my PS3, so I had to get wireless working to run PS3Grid. Yellow Dog 5.2 works pretty nicely. |

Hi,
I don't think that the USB key will be updated.
We tried to convince other Linux distributors to support it and more than anything evolve it, but with no success. Our idea was to have a nice distro with all the features including Wireless support, OpenOffice, VLC for video playing and so on.
What we are going to do is to provide in the forum the instructions for building a usb key by yourselves. You could then use the best Linux distro and just install the PS3 BOINC client.
If someone produces a good USB key, we will distribute from the website.

[Edit: in the meanwhile, you can use YDL] |

I have a petitboot compiled boot loader (otheros.bld) that "sees" a USB stick that has an etc directory and a kboot. cnf file on it when plugged in. It also 'sees' a different stick if that one is removed and another added, so I have a working boot menu system. It is the petitboot made by OpenSuse version 11 from June of last year. It puts up the menu, but I have yet to create a booting distro from USB key that works on the PS3. It boots all my HD installations just fine. I will keep working on getting a USB distro up on the PS3.
Once I do, I will surely pass it along.
Thank you. |
